Miami Trying To Land Booze

There was talk recently of Booze saying he might try to recruit Dwyane Wade to Chicago if he (Booze) gets traded there. Dwyane Wade, though, is 1 step ahead of Booze... trying to get his current team (Miami) to trade for Booze. And Miami seems to be listening.

The essentials of a possible deal would include Miami sending forward Udonis Haslem and Dorrell Wright to Utah. Because Memphis is under the cap, Utah could move Wright’s $2.8 million salary to the Grizzlies and save itself approximately $5.6 million with salary and luxury-tax payments. Memphis would probably get cash and picks for its trouble. The Heat would have to send one more small contract to make the math on the salary exchange work.

Miami would then be on the hook for Booze's $12.7 million this year, and could try to sign him to an extension. Via the same Yahoo! link, it is rumored that Booze wants $14 million/yr if he signs an extension... something most teams would avoid. Though Miami could do it. Because, truthfully, if that's what it's taking to keep Wade around for more than 1 season, it's probably worth it for them. But if the Jazz think Booze is getting that extension in Miami (and maybe even if not), is Haslem & cap space really fair value for Booze? Or does fair value become irrelevant right now? FWIW, I don't think it's fair value... I'd want Beasley or Cook or someone. If they want more space, they can then ship CJ to Miami (as has been mentioned before) or Memphis or something. I'd ask for Beasley. If not, I'd prefer Tyrus Thomas + whatever to Haslem. I mean, Haslem is like 'Sap, but commits fewer fouls.

Also from that (Yahoo!) link...

Portland is still trying to pry Tayshaun Prince out of Detroit in a three-way deal with Utah, but Pistons president Joe Dumars hasn’t shown an inclination to move Prince and extend Boozer’s contract, league sources say.

If they're willing to give up Prince, might it not just make sense to trade Booze for Prince? Why involve Portland? Is cap space so important that you'll help improve a team that's not only in the conference, but in the same DIVISION!, just so that you can resign Paul Millsap? Or is Prince really not that good?

About Haslem... I did post a bit about him at the first link above (linked again here)

-->Haslem is a bit undersized for a PF (6'8), but then again, we're used to that. He's not a shot blocker (again, used to it), but he's good at drawing the charge, and doesn't allow guys to just walk into good position in the post. He's not much of an offensive option (nowhere near Booze, that's for sure), but he's a good rebounder and can generally avoid fouls.

When everyone was clamoring about trading Booze... was the ideal target in return another undersized PF, one that isn't anything to write home about offensively and is probably just a 1-year "rental" to play off of the bench? I thought we were aiming a bit higher...

But what do I know? I'm just a fan, and they're NBA Finals winning professionals.

I agree man. This would be a horrible trade. When Booz is healthy, he is one of the ten best players in the league. This trade would make Shaq for Lamar Odem look good by comparisson. The Jazz need to be patient. Why again do we need to trade Booz this week? I guarantee you the guy will average 22 and 11 this year. Let him start the season, and wait for the best trade to come along. We want a guy that will help us win a championship, not a guy that is slightly better than Jarron Collins.

Wow, that trade is absolutely nothing more than a salary dump. There were rumors that New Jersey was interested. At least they have 2 picks next year that we could probably get. Tony Battie can be traded after Aug 25 and he is a 6+ million expiring contract. Add in Kenyon Dooling and the total is just over 10 million which is close enough to make the trade legal but save the Jazz 3 million after the luxury tax. Plus they might even be able to move Battie before the trade deadline to save a little more cash. Overall this deal isn't great value, but 2 picks is way better than Haslem. Combine those picks with the Knicks pick and the Jazz could get some good players next year.

Its pretty obvious that Boozer has about as much trade value as 1996 Honda Accord right now. The NBA is scared of this man as an injury risk/locker room cancer. Remember that we were all prepared to just let Boozer walk away for nothing if would have just opted out of his contract so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that the Jazz are getting the flaming bag of poo offers for him now.

I understand that this rumored trade is not sexy but, Udonis Haslem is a servicable player in the last of year of his contract so he will have value along with Matt Harpring and Kyle Korver as the deadline approaches. Every team trying to get cap space for next year will be coming to the Jazz for one of our expiring contracts so this might not be too bad in the end. Additionally, Haslem is one of those guys that teams who think they are close to a championship would want to trade for. So maybe Boston comes calling later this year with something that gives the Jazz a little more cap relief this year and pick next year. The point being is that the Jazz could do a lot worse than Udonis Haslem at this point. Tyrus Thomas and Michael Beasely are not being traded so we need to just get used this type of rumor for awhile.

Whoa Whoa Whoa Agreement. I have to disagree. One of the ten best players in the league? I'd say he's top 30 when he's healthy. There is no way he puts a Jazz jersey on. If the Jazz don't trade him by season start, he'll have a mystery injury and will not be required to dress or travel with the team.

His Utah days are done.

Side note: I for one, would like to see Jarron Collins back for another year. He's better than Fes.

Agreed. Haslem can play D which is already saying he'd be a sort of upgrade from Boozer.

Well I have to disagree with that. I think the Jazz need to let Boozer start and remind him daily that he's playing for his next contract. The Jazz don't need to trade him until February to avoid a salary cap hit. You know come February some team is going to be looking to add a piece to make a playoff push. Or if it's working out, keep riding Boozer about his contract year. Either he plays his guts out for once in his life, or he is exposed. Either way the Jazz win because even if he is exposed, he's still an expiring contract.

Side note: It's time to let go of Collins and let the youngsters play. Collins has no upside and can be described as serviceable at best. At least with the youngsters there's the chance that they'll break out.

Agreed. Fesenko > Collins.

And if nothing else... we know what Flop will give us. Not so sure about Fesenko, and he's shown more than Flop ever has (in very limited time).

True.

But is trading a solid PF (when healthy... which I know is the key here) for a serviceable player enough? I'd hope the Jazz could get something more, but maybe my expectations are too high...

Whoa, guys. You are all underselling Haslem quite a bit. He is an average offensive power forward. But he is a top 5 defensive power forward. He doesn't block shots, but he outpositions opposing players. Who played the Lakers best defensively in the low post? Not Dwight Howard. Chuck Hayes. Because he used his strength. Haslem is similar to Chuck Hayes only better. And his contract is expiring. Haslem would be a smart and good trade.

At least Haslem is a lot better than Thomas, probably on both sides of the ball. He just isn't as exciting or athletic. But basketball wise, Haslem is better than Tyrus Thomas.

But Haslem has more or less peaked. Thomas is still developing (though that would probably be stunted in Utah...).

You're right though... I'm probably overvaluing blocks too much. I just don't have many other ways to 'judge' his defensive ability, especially given that I don't watch many Heat games.

But for all his defense, the lack of presence offensively in the post will hurt given j-slow's offense, I think. Other than the pick-and-roll, dropping it in down low to the PF and letting him go to work is the biggest thing in the offense. And I don't know if a Haslem/'Sap/AK trio can do it as successfully as a healthy (as rare as it is) Booze. We'll see though, it seems...

Boozer will not play here. Are you kidding? can you imagine that locker room if they haven't traded him? Awkward...

We can let the youngsters play, if you don't mind another 28 win season?

Wow. I think you guys are way off with Fes. I haven't seen the guy run the offense correctly once. He's has a few swats, but other than that, I'd take Jarron's experience any day.

Expectations are too high. He's a cancer in the locker room. Like I've said all offseason, losing Boozer is addition by subtraction.

Few swats? If nothing else, that's more than Flop has done. But Fesenko has had the big games (LA in his first ever game, Houston last year, I think)... and has shown the ability to score around the hoop (put-backs and all). Sure he won't step out and blow the FT-line jumper like Flop, and he's not going to be Booze and dominate in the post, but he's able to score on put backs and all... which is important when this team is missing jumpers at an alarming rate.

Jarron's experience isn't going to get this team anywhere... so there's no point in paying him to be the 4th center on the team. And god forbid he take minutes away from The Koof (& Fesenko)
