We've Been Saying it for Years

In today's TrueHoop bullets, Henry Abbott points out an article from Neil Payne on the basketball-reference blog.  Payne addresses the all-too-common stance by many people that Isiah Thomas was a better point guard than John Stockton.  We all know better, and Payne makes a persuasive argument that we should be familiar with when people start talking about the all-time greats.  Here's an excerpt:

So why do people almost universally consider Thomas to be better than Stockton when they give their all-time point guard rankings? Stockton was more durable, more consistent, a better pure PG, more productive (both cumulatively and on a per-minute basis), and was even better in the playoffs, where Stock played a remarkable 182 career games.

Be sure to read the whole thing here.

This is really a stats spin. You can do the same thing to make a guy like Robert Horry to appear superior to his contemporaries.

One could get carpal tunnel pointing out Isiah's merits that can't be measured by stats, but better yet by the rings on his fingers.

No one is going to say Stock was a scrub, but Isiah is universally lauded as the better of the pairing because he just was. Generally for something to be universally accepted there must be a little something to it, right?

You have to be kidding. Was Laimbeer better than Malone too?

You're saying Isiah is to Stockton as Laimbeer is to Malone? Who's to one trying to jest?

Speaking of Malone...He was a 2K+ scorer from 1987/88-1999/00 while Isiah was winning rings with guys like a Bill Laimbeer who has until now never been compared to a guy like Karl Malone.

Switch situations and I don't think it ever becomes a question as to who the better point guard was. Isiah willed the Pistons to elite status beating the Michaels, Magics, and Birds of the league.
