Jazz 99, Rockets 86... The Numbers Game

I'm pretty sure most others saw the game, so I'll let them come and write about how the Jazz own the Rockets or how Ronnie Brewer was absolutely amazing or how Booze was totally infuriating (inferring this from the SLC Dunk game thread chat) or the likes. I didn't get to see the game, so I figure I'll look at the box score and point out the numbers that tell the story. Because everyone likes numbers.

12:1- Deron's assist:turnover ratio. Seeing him limit the turnovers is huge, because he normally has issues in that category. (He had 8 two games ago, and is averaging 3.5/game this season.)

10- How many more rebounds the Rockets got than the Jazz (offensively and total). Significant, because based on what I've read, the Rockets didn't really convert them into 2nd chance points.

34.8- The Rockets' shooting percentage. In other words... yikes!

26- Number of 3-pointers taken by the Rockets (as opposed to 14 for the Jazz). They made 10 of them... and were led by Shane Battier's 4-7 night and Ron Artest's 3-7 night.

34- Bench points score by the Jazz (11 for the Rockets). Even more significant because the Jazz starters were outscored by 10.

9- Number of starters in double-figures. The lone exception? That's right... CJ. He went 2-6 in 18 minutes, and missed 3 treys.

2- The number of shots made by Brev Brev (in 4 attempts). Just an FYI... the last time he took 4 shots in a game was February 23.

5-22- Ron Artest from the field last night. Truthfully, while the treys hurt, I can live with this.

5- Fouls on Booze.

12- Blocks by the Jazz. They got 4 from Okur and 3 from 'Sap to lead the way. This includes 5 blocks on shots by Artest (!) and 2 on shots by Yao.

7- Points managed by previous Jazz killers Von Wafer & Kyle Lowry.

0- Number of total minutes for Flop & Harpring. Flop doesn't surprise me (does he get more today so he can gameplan to foul Shaq?), but not playing Harpring against the Rockets? I'm impressed J-Slow...

8:30- Time of the Jazz game tonight (in Phoenix). The Suns are coming off of a day off, and are at home. Neither stands true for the Jazz. That said, a road win against a potential playoff team would be nice...

I have a question, UtesFan. Why do you not watch any of the games? It just strikes me odd that you're such a Jazz fan yet don't catch any of the games....then read second-hand accounts to write a recap. Not a criticism, I enjoy reading your analysis. Just curious. ????

The Offensive rebounding was a bit lame, but it seemed to me that the Jazz were playing small all night and getting shoved around a bit underneath. Which is odd considering that we are usually the ones doing the shoving around, but the Jazz competed hard after giving up the offensive rebound and limited the damage well. Ron-Ron was a mess last night, I dont think he took 2 decent shots all night and Ronnie Brewer pretty much put the clamps on him. I think D-Will and Ronnie played the best defense that I can remember. They pretty much shut down the back court of the Rockets.

Most of it is because I don't have the cable channels, so I can only watch the games that are on KJZZ. And there's only like 7 of those this year (including 1 tonight!)... I do occasionally watch games online, but as of late, my classes have been kicking my ass, so I've been trying to stay caught up in them. So the games take a backseat.

Believe... if more games were on KJZZ, I'd be watching them.

I think the Rockets got 6 of their offensive rebounds in one sequence. You all know the play.

What I noticed was the Un-Jazz-Like low turnovers. Proof that if you take care of the ball, you can lose in almost every statistical category, and still win the game.

That was a great win by the Jazzers. We needed that one bad. I'm actually feeling fairly optimistic for the game in Phoenix tonight. The line is 0 so it's a pick-em, and just to be a homer, I am going to say Jazz by 3.

my sources say the Suns are 4 point favs.

Not sure which Jazz team we see tonight, so I can't say what'll happen.

I wouldn't be surprised if we got blown out by 15+, but a 10 point win wouldn't surprise me either.

PS Why don't the talking heads like to point out that Portland has an equally bad road record?

Nice to see the Jazz win a big game, while not being on their "A" game.
D-Will didn't shoot well but made up for it on defense and a few others did the same. One thing I love about this season is watching the development of Brewer. I find myself getting excited for him and am also getting to the point where I count on him to have an explosive quarter. Nice work Brewskie. Nice work.
Play of the night for me, though, that didn't have anything to do with Brewer, was Korver diving for the ball at mid court. He wasn't sucessful, as he was called for the foul, but the effort was priceless. Very impressed by Korver last night and the last month or two.
Last of all though, I actually watched the game and we won. No more watching the game via iPhone....well, unless the lose tonight.

I think we all know how this road game against the Suns is going to go... We'd be lucky to beat the Mamphis Grizzlies on the road.

You're right - those pesky "Mamphis" Grizzlies are a tough out. Thank goodnes that we don't have any more home games against the really tough teams like the Sixers. That would be embarassing to lose to them at home.

Jazz will win tonight just because the NBA suits are putting this game on national television - so even though it is not a home game, the jazz get up for NTL TV games just as much (5-0) on the year.

There is no way I would bet on the Jazz tonight. Secong game of a back to back on the road with the streaking Suns after a late ending game with a physical team, but... Deron did have limited minutes last night, Booze should be going off one of these games, and as mentioned it is on national TV. We'll see how Sloan decides to hande the Big Cactus tonight.

You guys will win tonight. If the Blazers were playing in Phoenix though, it would be all over. I really wish The Blazers would pull their heads out.

Their is absolutly no excuse for the Jazz to not be able to come out ready to play tonight. After a 1 game in 6 days stretch, they cant say that they are tired. Last nights game should not have been very emotionally draining either since they were in ontrol for most of the second half and blew it open in the fourth. I think our boys will be fired up tonight. I'm feelin good about this one.

I like the confidence fella's but remember who we are talking about? I am not trying to be debbie downer, and I'm not saying it can't be done, but be cautious. Be very cautious.

P.S. Jazz will win by 40

There's no denying that the Jazz have their struggles on the road, but we don't struggle in Phoenix. The Suns make us run and that's when Deron really shines. Our last five games in Phoenix:

12/06/08 L 104-106
03/07/08 W 126-118
12/12/07 L 98-103
02/03/07 W 108-105
11/03/06 W 108-104

3 and 2 with our losses coming by an average of 3.5 points isn't bad. Keep in mind that's when the Suns were still championship contenders. With A'ma'r'e (I never know where it is) out, I like our chances. I'm worried about the back to back, but not Phoenix.

Have to ask... shouldn't your rooting interest be in the SA/ATL game?

Speaking of the Spurs, they need to lose.

I don't mind it. I'm not sure anything Grungedave does is intelligent or cute, but it's certainly acceptable. :-)

Bigger question is this: Nugs or Bugs? I gotta say N.O. because of the whole division thing, but the Hornets are closer in the standings....
