San Antonio Spurs (2-1) @ Utah Jazz (1-3)
Probable Line-Ups
Spurs: Mr. Longoria, Finley, Jefferson, The Big Fundamental Bore, Matt Bonner
Jazz: Deron, Brewer, AK-47, Booze, Okur
Coming In:
After the season ended last year, the Spurs realized that they needed to make a change. So they did, going out and trading Bruce Bowen & Kurt Thomas for Richard Jefferson. Change made. They also went out and added Antonio McDyess & Theo Ratliff, and drafted DeJuan Blair in the 2nd round after he fell due to injury concerns. So while the team returns its "core," they restocked and are ready to attack again this season.
Compare that to the Jazz, who entered the off-season with a similar conundrum... and just sat and did nothing after Boozer opted in. I wonder if they even considered making a trade when he was off running his mouth in Chicago/Miami.
The Spurs have started the season 2-1, with home wins against the Hornets & Kings sandwiching a road loss to Chicago. The Jazz played on Tuesday night, when they... well, ripped the hearts out of every Jazz fan in the state. Let's see if things change today...
What We Know About The Spurs... Through 3 Games (AKA: Overreactions & small sample sizes be ****ed.)
- The leading scorer is... Mr. Longoria!
- Duncan is the leading rebounder. Next in line, at about 4 rpg less is ... DeJuan Blair.
- They are currently 1st in the league with a shooting percentage of 50.8%. Seriously.
- Ginobili, Parker & Jefferson are all getting to the line.
- Only 3 guys on the team have double-digit rebounds so far.
- Richard Jefferson: 11.7 ppg, 2+ rpg. What you'd expect when you trade Bowen/Thomas for someone.
- Richard Jefferson: 11.7 ppg, 2+ rpg. Not what you'd expect from Richard Jefferson.
- Roger Mason is only 3-11 from downtown. Ginobili is just 3-13.
- Ginobili can save us all from the impending bat attack.
- Well, unless PETA throws another temper tantrum. (I'm all for animal rights, but they're doing more harm then good.)
- They have 5 guys getting double-digit points/game, and 2 more guys getting 8.3 ppg.
- The Spurs are coming off of a pounding of the Kings where Richard Jefferson finally got going.
- The Spurs are winless on the road.
Other Stuff To Know/Consider/Think About/Ignore
If the game was being played in San Antonio, it'd already be over. Luckily, it's not... The Spurs have had 5 days to prepare for the Jazz. I'm sure they spent 4.5 days searching for bats for Manu to take down (like Harry Potter and that golden ball in quidditch) and the last 0.5 practicing their lay-ups. Game preparation, done!... So, slow stuck with Okur on Dirk in the 4th because Booze had 5 fouls and they needed him on the floor. See, this is why we need a new coach... How about Booze (& Korver?) for Tyrus Thomas, John Salmons & Jerome James (for his contract)? The only guy who's contract goes past this year is Salmons, who would give the Jazz a shooter... The game is on TNT.
Quotes Of The Day
“You know exactly what you're going to get,” Popovich said. “Every single game, every single year.”
(Talking about seeing slow on the opposite sideline.) And that is why we're in trouble. Or at least part of it.
According to Sloan, he stuck with Okur on Nowitzki because Carlos Boozer had five fouls and the Jazz needed him on the floor.
Um... no. You most definitely did NOT need Booze on the floor there. He didn't want to go with 'Sap because that would make them too short. Fine, whatever. How about Fesenko, who frustrated Dirk in the 1st half? Or AK, who's a better defender than a health Okur (which he wasn't during the game)?
Keys For The Jazz What the Jazz have to do to win the game.
- Avoid the 4th quarter collapse.
- Avoid the 3rd quarter collapse.
- Avoid the 2nd quarter collapse.
- Avoid the 1st quarter collapse.
- Don't let a bat out... Ginobili got his rabies shot already
- Have more points on the board than the Spurs when the game ends.
- 'Sap or Booze has to show up. I'm beyond asking both of them to play well, but at least one of them?
- Don't turn into a jump-shooting team, whether winning or losing. You obviously suck at it.
- Play Fesenko!
- Okur needs to finish with more three-pointers made today than Bonner.
- Box out DeJuan Blair.
- Stop the drive. You're giving up 105 ppg... need to stop it from inside out.
- The starters are key again, because our bench sucks is struggling.
Sleeping With The Enemy
...Or at least fraternizing with them.
