The Disaster in Big D

Dear Jazz:

Why? Why, why, why? Why do you play a great game for 36 minutes, build a 16 point lead, and then let a guy score 29 points on you in the fourth to fuel a 27 point turn around? Why was Memo Okur with his bad ankle and bad knee forced to guard Dirk single coverage until the game was far out of reach? Why wasn’t AK guarding him? Why did the offense just shut down like the game was over with ten minutes to go in the fourth? I’m confused why pro athletes with just about as much talent as any team in the NBA can’t play a full 48. It’s sad, but I guess you just can’t teach heart…

Dirk Nowitzki had one of the greatest fourth quarter showings in NBA history. He was unbelievable. I don’t know what else to say about his performance other than I have never seen anything like it over the final 12-Not from anyone, not even MJ, and the Jazz did absolutely nothing to adjust. I understand that Dirk was on fire and that maybe there wasn’t anything the Jazz could do, but the disheartening thing is they didn’t even try.

Utah played an excellent game last night up until the fourth. The Defense was great, the offense started clicking in the third, and most importantly, the effort was as solid as it has been all year. Through three quarters, I give the Jazz an A-, but, unfortunately, the game is 48 minutes long.

Final grade: B-

Next up, San Antonio at home on Thursday. The good thing is the season is young, the bad thing is, the schedule doesn’t get any easier for the next couple of weeks. Somehow Jerry needs to get through to these guys that you can’t take a break in this league in any case. It doesn’t matter if it’s Golden State with seven healthy players at home or Dallas on the road with a huge lead. Teams that play all 48 win. Teams that don’t just end the season with a lot of regrets (i.e. playing the Lakers in the first round when one more win would have been the difference).

B-? Really?
That 4th quarter really ruined the night.
Booze played like crap. Late, Dirk got going with Okur (and his bad leg) against him defensively. And then Boozer on him.
'Sap, AK & even Fes, who frustrated Dirk a bit in the 1st half, didn't get a shot.
slow didn't call a TO until AFTER the lead was gone.

B- seems too high.
B- is too generous

I'll take your B- thru three quarters but you have to finish the entire test, and they didn't. D- at best. It's amazing how many times Sloan's teams collapse. It's embarrasing to be a Jazz fan right now.

The reason I give them a B- is because they played solid with a strong effort thru 3 quarters. Like I said, it was an A- effort until the fourth. Really though, the third quarter was probably the best all-around quarter they have played this year. Remember too that I am grading according to all-around effort (the lack of effort has pissed me off way too much so far this year), so theoretically, they could lose the game and get an "A".

Clearly the emphasis on defense was a mirage. I just don't think there is enough talent on this team. AK is done. We have no decent shooting guards. We have no back up point guard. We have no centers capable of playing defense. As long as AK is our small forward we're in trouble at SF. Our back-up centers are unproven. It's just a bad mix.
DIRK made OKUR look like a urinal cake

These 4th quarter meltdowns are making me puke in my mouth!!!

In each of the games I felt quite content and satisfied after 3 quarters... and then utter collapse. It's starting to turn into a pattern and that is cause for concern. I keep telling myself that Kyle Korver and CJ Miles are still out. They both, in their own right are integral members of the team. Their contributions may be small, but hopefully give them that extra edge in 4th quarters. A few 4th quarter 3's by Korver would have been welcomed in Dallas.

As for the 4th quarter defense... HORRIBLE!!!

The bottom of my toilet looks better.

My 1 year old niece could score on'em!

Okur should be sent back to Turkey for that one! Dirk Nowitzki absolutely schooled Okur in every possible way. He didn't know what was happening. The softest defense he could ever play. I think Okur's new nickname should be 'SOFT SERVE' until he learns how to play some hard nosed Sloan infused 'D'. I mean come on! Where's the intensity?? Where's the passion??

C'mon JAZZ!! Let's try and play a full game for once!

AND SOME DEFENSE FOR CHRISTS SAKE!!!!

Kinda hard to stick on Nowitzki when

1- You're not much of a defensive player anyways
2- Dirk's feeling it
3- You're on a bad leg

Slow should've known that and tried something different, but he refused to. Just stupid
